Superintendent's Visit - Follow Up

Let's offer a big "Thank you!" to Ms. Atkins for her visit to Greenbrier this week. How do you think the visit went? Could someone please post a short summary of the discussion for those in the community who were unable to attend? Thanks much.

I will try my best to summarize our discussion with Mrs. Atkins. We had a lengthy question and answer session with her. Here are the main topics I recall:
1 - There will be after-school intervention next year at the elementary schools.
2 - The pilot 3-year-old preschool class will be housed at Clark. They are not yet sure of the hours and who will be in the pilot class.
3 - Mrs. Atkins would like to see foreign language immersion at the elementary schools. She would like to see this start in 2008 but it will depend on that year’s budget.
4 - How our middle schools are set up will be reviewed starting in the fall with any possible changes to be implemented the following fall. Mrs. Atkins said all voices and opinions will be heard from the whole community. She said there will be different models for the community to review and comment on, including the current set-up.
5 - They are working on a curriculum for critical thinking. Mrs. Atkins said we have to meet the No Child Left Behind standards but we also need to work on important skills, like critical thinking.
6 - Regarding school safety, Mrs. Atkins said they met with police Chief Longo after the County school bomb threat. They continue to work with him on crisis plan reviews. They are also working on a way to alert parents how to pick up their children in the event of a crisis.

Someone else, please fill in the parts I missed!

Regarding foreign language immersion, what languages did Mrs. Atkins mention?
