Additional Greenbrier Principal Forum - 3:30 P.M. TOMORROW

This afternoon, a group of parents, faculty and staff of Greenbrier met with Mrs.. Atkins in the Greenbrier Library for an update on the search for a new Principal for Greenbrier. Mrs. Atkins informed those present that she had reviewed the feedback forms submitted after Tuesday's Principal Forum. Based on her review of the feedback, she determined that it would be advisable for the Greenbrier community to have the opportunity to meet two additional candidates for Principal. Those in attendance agreed that an opportunity to meet with additional candidates would be appropriate.

As a result, an additional Principal Forum has been scheduled for TOMORROW, Friday, June 1, at 3:30 P.M. at Greenbrier. Two additional candidates shall be present - the first at 3:30 and the second at 4:15. The format will be the same as Tuesday's Principal Forum and each candidate will address the same questions that were submitted on Tuesday.

Due to the short notice for this meeting, Greenbrier is still in the process of determining whether child care will be available, and we will send a follow-up e-mail message when we know more. We hope you will attend this important event tomorrow.

Principal Forum - Meet the Finalists

Next Tuesday, May 29th, from 5 - 8 pm, the three candidates to be the next Principal of Greenbrier are expected to attend a forum in the Greenbrier auditorium. Free child care will be available on site at Greenbrier.

Gertrude Ivory will introduce each candidate. Each candidate will be allotted approximately one hour. Each candidate will first address the community with her/his own thoughts and then respond to questions. The candidates will each address the same set of questions.

Parents will be given index cards at the start of the event on which to write questions, and all questions will screened to eliminate duplication. Parents will be given a feedback form after the forum which can be turned in for consideration by the Superintendent.

We hope you will attend this important event.

FYI.......The Principal Forums for Walker and Buford are as follows:

Wanted: Loving Home for Special Dog

Katrina Steddum and her family will be moving to Alaska in 5 weeks. They have a wonderful 8 year-old Chow/Lab dog (weighs about 50 pounds), and they are concerned that the extreme climate change will be too much for her. It has been a hard choice for her family, but they think it is best for the dog to find her a new home in here in Charlottesville.

Katrina says the dog loves kids, other animals, and to run and play, but she would also be happy to stay inside all day and cuddle with her toys. She does enjoy a peanut butter cracker sandwich at night, and Katrina can give her new owner her supply of those plus all of her other items.

If anyone is interested, please contact Katrina. If you need contact information please send us an e-mail, and we will provide her contact information to you.

Wanted: Empty Paper Towel and Toilet Paper Tubes

Please send in empty paper towel and or toilet paper tubes for a project that Ms. Shelton/Mrs. Schraeder have planned.

PTO Council Meeting

Here is a synopsis from the PTO Council meeting (05/10/07):

Two representatives from the Y were present to ask us to spread the word to our schools about a public forum on Wednesday, May 30 at 6:30 p.m. at Carver Rec. The Y and Parks & Rec are going to present a proposal to the public about plans to build the Y's new facility in McIntire Park. It would be a community center for everyone, regardless of age, gender, race, religion, socio-economic status, etc. The Y has been working with both the city and county Parks & Rec departments to figure out future collaborations. For example, Parks & Rec could use the Y's facility to hold classes. This facility would supplement the existing Parks & Rec facilities (including pools), not replace them. It would be accessible by city bus and, the Y hopes, make McIntire Park more of a community gathering space than it currently is. For more information: www.piedmontymca.org.

That's all that was discussed. There's another meeting in June and then a break until the new school year.

Greenbrier Honored as "Title I Distinguished School" for Third Consecutive Year

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 30, 2007

Greenbrier Elementary Honored for Third Year in a Row

Greenbrier Elementary School was honored for the third consecutive year as a “Title I Distinguished School” for meeting federal benchmarks in reading and mathematics, maintaining full accreditation for two consecutive years, and having mean test scores for both English and mathematics at the 60th percentile or higher.

“The success of these school divisions and schools is evidence that all children — regardless of their economic status — can learn and achieve when they are given effective and focused instruction,” said Virginia Board of Education President Mark Emblidge.

It is among 136 Virginia schools honored by the Virginia Board of Education for raising the achievement of economically disadvantaged students and for exceeding state accreditation standards and the annual objectives of the federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB).

Each Title I Distinguished School receives a framed certificate and an outdoor banner celebrating its status and achievement. The recognition is based on achievement during the 2005-2006 school year.
