Summer's on the Way

From the weather you might think it can't get here soon enough, but summer will be here before we know it. Of course along with the warm weather and sunshine comes the responsibility to keep our kids entertained with stimulating (and educational) activities. How do you plan to keep your kids happy, motivated, and learning this summer? Recommendations for summer reading and educational web sites would be great!

The American Library Association's "Favorite Websites for Kids" page has a list of hundreds of sites for kids of all ages. You can browse by category. Check this out next time you're stuck inside on a rainy afternoon:

Our second grader really loves the Lily Quench series of books. They're a quirky mix of Roald Dahl and Harry Potter, with even stronger female characters. These would be great books for curling up on the sofa on a blazing hot summer afternoon when it's too muggy to be outside.

I love to select a bigger book and read out loud to our boys (who are 2 years apart in age)during the summer. If feels harder to do during the school year when we have homework and are more worried about a good bedtime. It's fun to have the time to dive into something together. It seems the past few books have been Harry Potter. Hopefully we'll try something new this summer.

We also tend to do more experiments and time consuming projects during the summer. -- Jennifer Brecht
